The Cherry Creek Fire Department plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and protection of those traveling on Highway 4, which is the only paved road providing access to the Alberni Valley and the West Coast. Covering approximately 8 km of this vital highway, our team responds swiftly to motor vehicle incidents, offering essential services that include fire suppression, medical assistance, and extrication.

Why Highway 4 is Crucial:

  • Highway 4 is the primary route for those traveling to and from the West Coast of Vancouver Island, seeing upwards of 1 million vehicles per year.
  • It connects key communities and serves as a lifeline for residents, tourists, and businesses in the Alberni Valley and surrounding areas.
  • The highway’s high traffic volume, combined with its winding, mountainous terrain, makes it prone to motor vehicle accidents that require rapid and efficient emergency response.

Cherry Creek Fire Department’s Role:

  • Motor Vehicle Incident Response: CCFD is on call to respond to all types of motor vehicle incidents along the 8 km stretch of Highway 4, ensuring rapid arrival and intervention. Our firefighters are trained in vehicle extrication, providing a crucial service during accidents where passengers are trapped.
  • Auto Extrication Assistance: In cases where individuals are trapped inside vehicles, the Port Alberni Fire Department supports us by providing additional auto extrication resources (Tasked by EMCR). Together, we work seamlessly to extricate victims safely from the wreckage, utilizing specialized equipment such as hydraulic cutters, spreaders, and rescue tools
  • Fire Suppression and Hazard Control: In the event of a vehicle fire, our team is equipped with the tools and training to quickly suppress flames, preventing further damage or injury.
  • First Responder Medical Support: Our First Responder program ensures that we are equipped to provide immediate medical assistance for accident victims, stabilizing patients and providing care until BCEHS paramedics arrive on the scene.
  • Hazardous Materials Management: Highway 4 is also a busy route for transport trucks carrying hazardous materials. Our team is trained to manage potential spills or leaks, ensuring public safety and minimizing environmental impact.

Supporting the Community:

With highway safety being a top priority for the Cherry Creek Fire Department, we continue to work closely with other agencies and fire departments, as well as local authorities, to maintain a safe environment for all travelers on this busy route.
